Readers
The Readers screen lists every reader on your account and answers the first question anyone asks about one: is it working, and if not, why not?
Reading the list
| Column | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Status | online, degraded, offline, or stopped (see below). |
| Connection | Whether the reader currently has its connection to Titan open. |
| Last seen | The most recent sign of life of any kind: a tag read, a status message or a connection. |
| Model / Serial / Firmware | Reported by the reader itself. The serial is what support will ask for. |
| Health | Temperature, CPU and memory, when the reader reports them. A reader at 65 °C or above raises an alert because it may start to throttle. |
Statuses
- Online. Connected, and the radio is confirmed to be working.
- Degraded. Connected but not fully healthy. Usually it has just come back and hasn't confirmed its radio yet, or it's connected but no tag data is arriving. Often clears on its own within a minute or two.
- Offline. Titan has lost contact. The hub shows the reason and what to do about it.
- Stopped. Someone stopped the reader on purpose. This isn't a fault, and it doesn't raise an alert.
When a reader is not online, the hub explains why in a sentence:
| Reason | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Never reached Titan | The reader has never connected. | Check power and cabling, and that TCP 8883 outbound to mqtt.titanrfid.com is allowed. See Network requirements. |
| Dropped its connection | It was connected and then disconnected or lost power. | Almost always power or network at the reader: the PoE port, then the switch, then the site's internet connection. |
| No tag reads yet | Connected but hasn't sent any reads. | Give it a moment after a restart. If it stays like this, check the antennas are connected and there are tags in front of them. |
| Radio stopped | Connected but the radio has stopped. | Press start. If it stops again, check the antenna cabling, which is the usual cause. |
| Stopped | Someone stopped it. | Press start when you want it reading again. |
Adding a reader
Readers arrive configured, and there's nothing to install. Plug the reader into PoE. If it came with a claim code (TTN-XXXX-XXXX), go to Add a reader, enter the code and a name, and choose Claim reader. If it didn't come with a code, it's already on your account and will appear by itself. See First-day setup.
The number of readers you can have is set by your plan. See Subscription.
The Add a reader panel also has an option labelled My reader is on this network. It's for readers that Titan can reach directly, and a reader we ship you isn't one of those. You don't need it.
Starting and stopping
Each reader has a start / stop button. Stopping a reader turns off its radio so it stops reading tags, but it stays connected and still reports its health. Use it when you're working near the antennas, or when a zone should go quiet for a while.
The command travels to the reader over its existing connection, usually within a second or two. The reader's panel shows the last instruction sent and whether the reader confirmed it.
If a stopped reader loses power or restarts, check its status once it's back. Make sure it's in the state you expect before relying on it being quiet.
Antennas
Choose antennas on a reader to map each port to a zone and adjust its radio settings. See Zones and antennas.
Removing a reader
delete removes the reader from your account, along with any open alerts about it. The tags it has read, and their data and history, are kept.
Only remove a reader you're retiring or sending back. If you delete one by mistake, contact [email protected] with its serial number.
Moving or returning a reader
- Moving a reader to another spot on the same site: unplug it and plug it in again. It reconnects by itself. Remember to update its antenna-to-zone mapping if it now watches different places.
- Moving it to another site or another network: check that network meets the requirements first.
- Returning a reader, or giving it to someone else: contact support. We release it from your account and revoke its certificate so it can no longer connect as yours.
The reader's connection to Titan is set up on our bench before it ships. A factory reset from the reader's own web page or the reset button can remove that setup, and then the reader can't reach Titan until we set it up again. If you think a reader needs a reset, contact support first.
